Colombia's richest man, Luis Sarmiento controls more than a quarter of the country's financial industry through the four lenders that form Grupo Aval. His investment bank, Corficolombiana, owns stakes in infrastructure, agribusiness, energy and tourism ventures. He also builds commercial and residential real estate via Construcciones Planificada. Sarmiento has a current estimated worth of $16.5 billion.

Exactly 111 people can count their wealth at more than $1 billion, according to consultancy firm Wealth-X and Swiss bank UBS. 2013 saw the list grow by three names compared to 2012; their combined wealth reaches $496 billion, or 2.3 percent more than the previous year.
